Volunteers to assist in the rescue, care, and adoption of dogs, cats and rabbits coming from Castro Valley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and the unincorporated parts of Hayward, in an animal shelter. In the volunteer office, duties include mopping the floor and cleaning litter boxes and cages, and also feeding, watering, brushing, petting and playing with cats, and with support, medicating cats. Volunteers in the shelter will feed cats and dogs.

Hours: Shifts exist between 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM daily. Specific hours on certain days will call for different duties than other shifts.
Clearance: A completed and approved shelter volunteer form is required upon arrival at an orientation. Students have to specify their involvement in the Chabot College Service-Learning Partnership.
Orientation: An hour-long orientation is held on a weekly basis every Saturday at 1:00 PM. Appointments are not necessary to attend so prospective volunteers should simply walk into an orientation.


Childcare

Volunteers to provide support to the Chabot College Childcare Center. Volunteers will assist in scheduled daily activities, and will have an opportunity to lead individually designed programs.

Hours: Weekdays between 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Some evenings between 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Clearance: Fingerprinting and TB testing is required of students. Students may start service without clearance but will only be allowed to claim 2 hours before complete clearance is passed.
Orientation: A group orientation and screening will be held specifically for service-learning students.

Volunteers to provide support in a K-12, hearing-impaired youth educational community. Examples of existing volunteer opportunities include volunteering in the classroom, in offices, in the Student Health Center, and in the cottages in the evenings, helping students with homework and their evening/night preparations. The variety of amount of volunteer opportunities is decided by the volunteer's age, interest, and ability to sign.

Clearance: A completed and approved volunteer application, TB testing and fingerprinting is required, and potential volunteers may not start any service until they are cleared. Fingerprinting must be done at the site, after the site receives the student's TB results (TB test may be done at Chabot at no cost to the student). As the processing time is dependent on the DoJ and may take from days to weeks, the site recommends that the applicant begin this process as early as possible.

Volunteers to provide aid to residents in an emergency shelter for women and children. The location to either site, in Alameda or San Leandro, is disclosed to students on an individual basis. Most volunteers will assist in general children's programming, such as baking cookies, beading projects, and t-shirt decorating, among others. Volunteers can also, with arrangement, provide after-school tutoring, serve dinner to residents, or work on special weekend projects.

Hours: Shifts are available from Sunday to Thursday, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Students will individually arrange their schedule with the site.
Clearance: A completed and approved volunteer application, background check, and confidentiality agreement is required before starting service.
Orientation: An hour-long orientation is held specifically for Chabot service-learning students, organized between the Chabot service-learning program and the site. The mandatory confidentiality agreement is completed at this time.

Volunteers construct affordable housing for formerly-homeless and low-income families. Volunteers do all aspects of construction, directed by site leaders. No experience neccessary.

Hours: Most construction shifts are all-day shifts (8:30 AM- 4:30 PM), but half-day shifts can be arranged.

Orientation: Orientations are held at the Community Reformed Church in East Oakland, 457 Capistrano Dr, from 10-11 AM every Saturday. A brief information session about the mission and purpose of Habitat for Humanity precedes each day of building.
